Why Chinese Actress Zhang Jingyi’s $1,790 "Trash-Bag Style" Luxury Bag is a Big Controversy
Sometimes, luxury brands do things that normal people just cannot understand. Recently, the public has been very critical of brands like Balenciaga and Apple for selling everyday items at the price of a car.
1. Zhang Jingyi and the $1,790 Bag That Looks Like a Trash Bag (March 2026)
Earlier this month, at the 2026 Beijing International Film Festival, a famous Chinese actress named Zhang Jingyi shocked the audience. She wore a beautiful gown, but she carried a black bag that looked exactly like a plastic trash bag from a kitchen.
This bag was designed by Demna Gvasalia, the head of Balenciaga. He openly said he wanted to create the "most expensive trash bag." Even though it is made of expensive leather, it still looks like garbage to any normal person.
Why would anyone pay $1,790 (2.4 million won) to carry a bag that looks like a trash bag? It feels like the brand is just testing how much money people will waste just for a luxury label.
2. The $250 "Apple Sock" (November 2025)
Apple did something similar in November 2025. They released the "iPhone Pocket," but everyone called it the "Apple Sock." This is because it looks just like a cheap, basic sock you can find anywhere.
It was designed by Yoshiyuki Miyamae. Because of his name and the Apple logo, the price is $250 (340,000 won). It is just a small piece of fabric, but it costs as much as a new iPad. It is hard to understand why a "sock" for a phone needs to be this expensive.
Conclusion: Common Sense vs. Luxury Labels
Of course, some people will buy these items and call them the "latest trend." Spending money is a personal choice. However, most consumers with common sense would never buy these products. To a normal person, a bag that looks like a trash bag or a 340,000 won phone sock is not "cool." It is just a total waste of money.
Real fashion should have a value that people can respect, not just a crazy price tag on something that looks like it belongs in a trash can.
